Cardless transactions are secure with Fuel Island Manager.

 

 There are many different types of RFID tags.  The need for security varies with the application. Where security is a concern, then tags are available with varying degrees of security. The Fuel Island Manager uses a tag with multiple layers of security.  The EPC Gen 2 passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tag, referred to as the "Gen-2 tag," is one of the most secure RFID tags currently available. The security difference between this tag and other RFID tags is comparable to the safety difference between a Volvo with side curtain airbags and a Model T. The RFID tag used by the Fuel Island Manager™ system has an integrated circuit "silicon" chip built in that allows for multiple security layers. The Fuel Island Manager uses the tag only to initiate a transaction, not to authorize it.

Multiple Security layers

  • RFID - the EPC Gen 2 passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID chip used in the Fuel Island Manager™ system has several layers of security. One layer is a permanent TagID or TID in the chip.  Fuel Island Manager uses this as the primary identification of the vehicle. Duplicating the TID would require a silicon chip manufacturing capability. Other layers of security are employed, including passwords and other features of the chip manufacturer.
  • Fuel Island Manager™ - the RFID tag is only used to initiate a transaction by identifying a specific vehicle within the "fueling zone" in a specific fuel lane. Authorization takes place in the fuel transaction system. In the case of DFConnect™ the authorization process is checking several data elements to test the validity of the transaction.
  • Other - it is essential that a carrier treat its supply of RFID tags as it would any other security device. The carrier should insure that tags are correctly and permanently installed in the designated vehicle, or the tag would become as portable as a magnetic stripe card with all the related security problems.
